Postgraduate Student Guidelines

FIST offers 2 types of postgraduate programmes; Master's and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) by research. These degrees are awarded on the basis of the quality of the thesis and passing a viva voce examination.

  1. General Information regarding the Master's and Ph.D. Programmes by Research (Structure A):
    1. Entry Requirements:

      Master of Science (Information Technology) - M.Sc.(I.T.)

      A candidate admitted into MSc(IT) shall normally possess any of the following qualifications and illustrate that she/he is qualified to undertake postgraduate work:

      1. A Bachelor degree with minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent, in a Computer Science or Information Technology or relevant field from MMU or institutions recognised by Senate; or
      2. A Bachelor degree or equivalent with minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not meeting CGPA of 2.75, in a Computer Science or Information Technology or relevant field from MMU or institutions recognised by Senate, and evidence of at least one (1) year relevant working or research experience, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment; or
      3. A Bachelor degree or equivalent not meeting CGPA of 2.50, in a Computer Science or Information Technology or relevant field from MMU or institutions recognised by Senate, can be accepted subject to a minimum of five (5) years working experience in relevant field.

      Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.

      A person admitted into Ph.D. shall normally have:

      1. A Master degree or equivalent in a Computer Science or Information Technology or related field from MMU or institutions recognised by Senate; or
      2. A Master degree or equivalent in a non-related field from MMU or institutions recognised by Senate, and evidence of at least two (2) years relevant working or research experience; or
      3. Other academic qualifications equivalent to (a) or (b) that are accepted by Senate.

      Upon admission to the programme, the University may require a candidate to follow any subject/s taught at the undergraduate/postgraduate level if the University is of the opinion that the subject/s are required for the candidate to complete her/his study successfully.


    2. English Requirements:

      In addition to the academic requirements, an applicant is also required to possess one of the following:

      • a minimum overall TOEFL Score of 580 (papaer based)or 237 (computer based)or 92 (internet based); or
      • a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5; or
      • a credit in 1119 English Examination; or
      • a minimum score of 580 in Multimedia University's English Language Proficiency Test; or
      • a minimum MUET overall band score of 4; or
      • other qualification which is of equivalent level as decided by the Senate of the University.

      All applicants MUST MEET the required English Language requirement before being admitted to the programme of study.

      Upon recommendation of the Faculty, Senate may waive the English requirement for students who have obtained their Bachelor or Master's degrees, where English has been used as the sole medium of instruction or as one of the media of instruction. The Faculty shall interview the candidates and recommend to the Senate for waiver, where appropriate.

      If the student lacks i.e. research skills or a good command of English upon admission to the programme then each faculty reserves the right to have the student acquire such competency.


    3. Types of Candidature:

      Can either be Full-time or Part-time

      Master's - Full-time: minimum 1 year; maximum 3 years
      Part-time: minimum 2 years; maximum 5 years
      Ph.D. - Full-time: minimum 2 years; maximum 5 years
      Part-time: minimum 3 years; maximum 7 years
    4. Closing Date:

      There is no closing deadline. Application can be submitted throughout the year by monthly.


    5. Application Form:

      Can be obtained either through Institute for Postgraduate Studies (IPS) website or from the Centre itself. Please provide self-addressed envelope and stamp for our further action.

  2. How to Apply?

    Basically, the application process into our postgraduate programmes is very simple, as it requires applicant to:

    1. Fill in an application form;
    2. Attach transcripts and mark sheets, and degree certificates
      You are to attach any previous degree completed/formal transcripts and mark sheets of your academic record, providing full details of the degrees, classes, grades you have obtained and the units you have taken, either in local or foreign universities. Preferably the documents are to be in English
    3. Submit a research proposal
      This is for the University to easily identify the potential supervisor and to ensure that the research project is within the interest of the University.
    4. Nominate two (2) referees
      Preferably one referee is an academician. However, you may nominate two (2) referees that are of good standing who know you well enough to provide a good recommendation for you.
    5. Pay RM50.00 (local applicants)/USD80.00 (RM280.00) (international applicants) processing fee
      The processing fee is to be made payable to MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY by postal order/money order/bank draft. No application will be processed without the fee.

    * (a), (b), (c) & (d) are to be submitted in two (2) sets. Failure to submit either one of the above will delay the process of the application.

  3. Other Special Courses
    1. Research Methodology

      Master's Degree

      All candidates MUST undertake the Research Methodology course within the first six (6) months from date of registration.

      Doctor of Philosophy

      All candidates MUST undertake the Research Methodology course within the first nine (9) months from date of registration.

      *Subject to recommendation by the faculty, a candidate may be waived if there is proof of attendance of similar courses before. Waiver is to be approved by the Senate. The grades obtained will not be taken into consideration for the award of either Ph.D. or Master's degrees. Degrees are awarded solely on the basis of the quality of the thesis and passing a viva voce examination.

    2. Enterpreneurship Course

      Master's and Ph.D. candidates MUST undertake the course before submission of thesis for examination.
