FIST offers 2 types of postgraduate programmes; Master's and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD.) by research. These degrees are awarded on the basis of the quality of the thesis and passing a viva voce examination. A candidate may be required to attend courses as decided by the FIST (more information follows).
General Information regarding the Masters and Ph.D. Programmes by Research:
A candidate admitted into MSc(IT) shall normally possess any of the following qualifications and illustrate that she/he is qualified to undertake postgraduate work:
A Bachelor's Degree from MMU; or
A Bachelor's Degree with Honours of another university recognized by the Senate; or
Equivalent qualification of an institution approved by the Senate of comparable academic status.
Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)
A person admitted into PhD shall normally have:
A Master's degree from MMU and shows evidence of adequate related research or work experience to the satisfaction of the Senate; or
A Master's degree of another university or equivalent qualification of an institution approved by the Senate and show evidence of adequate related research or work experience to the satisfaction of the Senate; or
Any other qualifications equivalent to both (a) and (b) as approved by the Senate.
Upon admission to the programme, the University may require a candidate to follow any subject/s taught at the undergraduate/postgraduate level if the University is of the opinion that the subject/s are required for the candidate to complete her/his study successfully.
In addition to the academic requirements, an applicant is also required to possess one of the following:
a minimum overall TOEFL Score of 580 (papaer based)or 237 (computer based)or 92 (internet based); or
a minimum IELTS overall band score of 6.5; or
a credit in 1119 English Examination; or
a minimum score of 580 in Multimedia University's English Language Proficiency Test; or
a minimum MUET overall band score of 4; or
other qualification which is of equivalent level as decided by the Senate of the University.
All applicants MUST MEET the required English Language requirement before being admitted to the programme of study.
Upon recommendation of the Faculty, Senate may waive the English requirement for students who have obtained their Bachelor or Master's degrees, where English has been used as the sole medium of instruction or as one of the media of instruction. The Faculty shall interview the candidates and recommend to the Senate for waiver, where appropriate.
If the student lacks i.e. research skills or a good command of English upon admission to the programme then each faculty reserves the right to have the student acquire such competency.
Master and Ph.D. by research only. Upon admission to programme, the University may require a candidate to follow any subject/s taught at the undergraduate/postgraduate level if the University is of the opinion that the subject/s is required for the candidate to complete her/his study successfully.
Types of Candidature:
Can either be Full-time or Part-time
Full-time: minimum 1 year; maximum 3 years
Part-time: minimum 2 years; maximum 5 years
Full-time: minimum 3 years; maximum 5 years
Part-time: minimum 5 years; maximum 7 years
There is no closing deadline. Application can be submitted throughout the year by monthly.
Basically, the application process into our postgraduate programmes is very simple, as it requires applicant to:
Fill in an application form;
Attach transcripts and mark sheets, and degree certificates You are to attach any previous degree completed/formal transcripts and mark sheets of your academic record, providing full details of the degrees, classes, grades you have obtained and the units you have taken, either in local or foreign universities. Preferably the documents are to be in English
Submit a research proposal This is for the University to easily identify the potential supervisor and to ensure that the research project is within the interest of the University.

Nominate two (2) referees Preferably one referee is an academician. However, you may nominate two (2) referees that are of good standing who know you well enough to provide a good recommendation for you.
Pay RM50.00 (local applicants)/USD80.00 (RM280.00) (international applicants) processing fee The processing fee is to be made payable to MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY by postal order/money order/bank draft. No application will be processed without the fee.
* A, B, C & D are to be submitted in two (2) sets. Failure to submit either one of the above will delay the process of the application.
Other Special Courses
All candidates MUST undertake the Research Methodology course within the first six (6) months from date of registration.
Doctor of Philosophy
All candidates MUST undertake the Research Methodology course within the first nine (9) months from date of registration.
*Subject to recommendation by the faculty, a candidate may be waived if there is proof of attendance of similar courses before. Waiver is to be approved by the Senate. The grades obtained will not be taken into consideration for the award of either Ph.D. or Masters degrees. Degrees are awarded solely on the basis of the quality of the thesis and passing a viva voce examination.
Masters and PhD candidates MUST undertake the course before submission of thesis for examination.
